Mr Otto von Arx is a specialist in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery and experienced in most sub-specialities with orthopaedic surgery, primarily spinal surgery.
He has undertaken research and audit projects during his career, which has culminated in local & international podium presentations and publications in peer reviewed journals.

My principle interest is spinal surgery. Two six month spinal surgery placements afforded exposure to the full gamut of spinal practice. As a result, I have developed a sound underpinning of spinal surgical practice, including pre-operative, perioperative and post-operative care of spinal trauma and elective surgical patients.
My AO Spinal fellowship has delivered a comprehensive supervised and unsupervised pre-, peri- and post-operative management programme of spinal patients. The programme has provided extensive practical management of adult spinal trauma, adult degenerative pathology and paediatric deformity.
I have attained experience in:
• anterior cervical decompression and fusion
• posterior cervical instrumentation
• posterior thoracic instrumentation
• anterior thoracic reconstruction for trauma and tumour
• lumbar decompression
• lumbar discectomy
• postero-lateral lumbar instrumentation and fusion
• transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion
• anterior lumbar interbody fusion .
• paediatric deformity surgery
• Including the use of growing rods
• Video assisted endoscopic anterior deformity surgery
My current area of interest is in the effective utilisation of a multi-disciplinary team approach, particularly physiotherapy practitioners, for managing spinal surgery referrals and outpatient waiting lists and developing Spinal Surgical training and teaching.
I am a Severn Spinal Network Board Member and Severn Spinal Network Regional Governance Board member.
