Mr Shyam AJ Kumar
LLM; FRCS (Tr & Orth); FRCSEd; FRCS; FEBOT; Cert MR
Mr Shyam Kumar is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon working at University
Hospitals Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, and has been working there as a
consultant since August 2011. He is involved in all aspects of trauma care and
undertakes general orthopaedic trauma on-call duty. His elective work covers upper
limb surgery.
Mr Kumar acts as an expert witness, including the preparation of timely medico-legal
reports and giving evidence in court in personal injury and clinical negligence cases.
He is a member of the Medico-legal Committee of the British Orthopaedic Association.
He can take instructions on behalf of either claimant or defendant, or as a Single Joint
Expert. Mr Kumar is trained by the GMC in assessing doctors with clinical concerns.
He is currently serving as an examiner for the FRCS (Tr&Orth) and the Royal College
of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is also an AAC panel member and Regional Specialist
Professional Advisor for the Royal College of Surgeons, England. He is on the
Surgical Specialty Board for Trauma & Orthopaedics at the Royal College of
Surgeons, Edinburgh.
Mr Kumar always endeavours to achieve excellence, as evidenced by his experience
and qualifications. His master’s degree in Medical Law (LLM) – which he completed in
November 2018 with merit – made him one of a select group of NHS consultants
holding such a qualification. Modules included ‘Introduction to Healthcare Law and
Ethics’, ‘Patient Safety, Quality and Professional Regulation in Health’, ‘Medical
Negligence’, ‘Expert Evidence’, ‘Coroners’ Law’, and ‘Consent and Incapacitated
Patients’. Mr Kumar has also attended Bond Solon training.
Mr Kumar has more than 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals, he has
contributed to the peer-review of research articles for various orthopaedic journals,
and this experience helps him to look more critically at research material.
