Mr Amar Saxena, Consultant Neurosurgeon- Profile

After his Neurosurgical training (obtaining degrees of MS in Gen Surgery and MCh in Neurosurgery) & working as Consultant Neurosurgeon in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, India, Mr Saxena moved to UK in 1995. He completed his neurosurgical training at ‘United Leeds Teaching Hospitals’, obtained FRCS (Eng)(1997), Specialist Accreditation (1999), FRCS Surgical Neurology)(2000) and a ‘Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in 2001. He was appointed as a Substantive Consultant Neurosurgeon at University Hospital (UHCW) in Coventry on the 16 August 2001.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE Mr Saxena has extensive experience (over 22 years) as a Consultant Neurosurgeon, covering the whole spectrum of brain and spine surgery (except Paediatric and Functional). ‘BBC West Midland News’ telecast his first ‘Total cervical disc replacement’ surgery on the 12 June 2007. ‘BBC Two’ telecast a series called ‘HOSPITAL’ based on UHCW on 15 June 2021. Episode 4 covered Neurosurgery (including live surgery by Mr Saxena). (‘HOSPITAL’, Series 7, Episode 4 – BBC Two’).

ADMINISTRATIVE & TEACHING EXPERIENCE: 1. DEPARTMENTAL: As Clinical Lead (2016-2019), Mr Saxena developed Trust Guidelines including a) for Prevention of wrong level spine surgery & b) GP referral of patients with back & neck pain and Protocols for management of patients with aneurysmal SAH.

REGIONAL: Mr Saxena is currently the Regional Specialty Professional Advisor in Neurosurgery for the West Midlands since 2014 (a Royal College of Surgeons, England Appointment), He has been the Chairman of Specialty Training Committee in Neurosurgery for West Midlands for 8 years (2005-12).

NATIONAL ROLES:As a member of the Specialty Advisory Committee in Neurosurgery (2011-19), Mr Saxena was involved in monitoring standards of neurosurgical training, ‘National Neurosurgery Selection’, ‘Neurosurgery Exit Exam’ & Certification of Completion of Neurosurgical Training.

Mr Saxena runs a National ST3 Simulation course in Neurosurgery annually (conceptualised & developed by him in 2016). This ‘high fidelity simulation course’ is recognised by RCS England & is part of ST3 National Curriculum. B) As member of the National Neurosurgery Selection Board, Mr Saxena was involved in ‘National recruitment of Neurosurgical trainees’ for UK for many years since its inception.

INTERNATIONAL ROLES:Mr Saxena was an elected representative of the SBNS and a member of European Association of Neurological Societies (EANS) Training Committee (2012-16) and was actively involved in teaching on EANS courses across Europe.

1. SPINE A) Degenerative cervical spine disease (disc & stenosis) B) Degenerative lumbar disease (Disc & stenosis C) Whiplash injuries involving cervical & lumbar spine D) Intradural/extramedullary benign spinal tumours. E) Cervical spine trauma and F) Rheumatoid cervical spine;

2. NEUROVASCULAR: management for aSAH, Aneurysms, AVMs, cavernomas (& their surgery);

3. BENIGN CRANIAL TUMOURS Meningiomas, III Ventricular colloid cyst (transcallosal approach), arachnoid cyst, choroid plexus papillomas;

4. Surgery for TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA, HEMIFACIAL SPASM (microvascular decompression);

5. CHIARY MALFORMATION (including craniocervical decompression);

6. ADULT HYDROCEPHALUS: Special interest in Endocopic III Ventriculostomy

B. Mr Amar Saxena offer a ‘Second Opinion Consultation’ on any of the areas described above.

C. Mr Saxena also provides Medico-legal reports for injuries claims.

He has a good experiences of Medico-legal work in his initial years as a Consultant Neurosurgeon and then the medico-legal work was reduced. However, he has started medico-legal work again and intends to increase this work.
