Recognising Excellence, Experience and Outstanding Contribution in Expert Witness Practice

The Federation of Forensic & Expert Witnesses (FFEW) Awards recognise outstanding professionals working across the medico-legal, forensic, scientific, technical and specialist expert witness sectors.

Expert witnesses play an essential role within the legal system. Their knowledge, independence and ability to interpret complex evidence can help solicitors, barristers, courts, tribunals and other legal professionals understand matters that fall outside ordinary legal expertise.

For that reason, recognition by the FFEW is not taken lightly.

Our awards are designed to highlight individuals and organisations within our membership whose professional background, experience and contribution to their specialist field demonstrate a particularly high standard.

HOW FFEW AWARD RECIPIENTS ARE CONSIDERED

FFEW award recipients are selected mainly from within our established membership or potential new members we have researched.

Rather than relying simply on nominations or a public vote, we look more closely at the professional career and expert witness credentials of individuals being considered.

Our research can include examination of areas such as:

Professional qualifications and education – including academic qualifications, specialist training, fellowships, professional memberships and continuing professional development.

Career history and specialist experience – looking at the depth and relevance of an expert’s professional career and the experience they have accumulated within their particular discipline.

Expert witness experience – considering the individual’s established involvement in medico-legal, forensic or specialist expert witness work.

Case experience and workload – where information is available, we consider the nature and volume of expert instructions undertaken and the level of experience this represents.

Areas of expertise – examining the specialist knowledge an expert is able to bring to legal proceedings and the particular types of disputes, injuries, investigations or technical matters in which they are instructed.

Professional background and standing – researching publicly available professional information, career achievements and other relevant material that helps us build a broader picture of the individual or organisation.

Contribution to their profession – including leadership, research, teaching, publications, innovation, training or other work that has helped advance their specialist field.

Longevity and consistency – recognising experts who have demonstrated sustained professionalism and commitment over a significant period of their career.

Every expert has a different professional journey. The purpose of the FFEW Awards is therefore not to create a simple league table, but to recognise individual excellence and meaningful professional achievement.

WHY EXPERT WITNESSES MATTER

Modern litigation increasingly involves highly specialised issues.

Medical negligence, personal injury, dentistry, surgery, psychiatry, engineering, construction, digital evidence, financial investigation, collision investigation, forensic science, human trafficking, fraud and countless other areas can involve evidence that requires considerable specialist knowledge.

An expert witness must do much more than simply understand their profession.

They must be capable of analysing information objectively, identifying the matters relevant to the court, preparing clear and reasoned reports and explaining complex subjects in a way that legal professionals, judges and tribunals can understand.

Above all, an expert witness’s overriding duty is to provide independent and impartial expert opinion.

It is this combination of expertise, experience, independence and communication that makes highly experienced expert witnesses such an important part of the justice system.

CELEBRATING SOME OF THE FFEW’S LEADING EXPERTS

Across the FFEW membership we represent professionals from a remarkably diverse range of disciplines.

Our awards provide an opportunity to tell the stories behind some of those experts.

For selected recipients we produce dedicated editorial features, professional profiles, award announcements and specialist newsletters examining their careers, qualifications, areas of expertise and expert witness services.

This gives solicitors and other instructing parties an opportunity to understand considerably more about the individual behind the expert report.

MORE THAN AN AWARD

An FFEW Award is intended to recognise the professional journey behind the expert.

For many recipients that journey represents decades of education, clinical or professional practice, specialist training, research and real-world experience before their knowledge is ever applied within the legal arena.

Our awards allow the Federation to bring those achievements together and provide greater visibility to experts whose knowledge may prove invaluable when the right specialist expertise is required.

Some recipients have built distinguished careers spanning many decades. Others are recognised for a particularly important contribution to their profession, an exceptional specialist practice or the development of expertise within an emerging area.

What connects them is the strength of the professional background that sits behind their expert witness work.

HELPING THE LEGAL PROFESSION IDENTIFY SPECIALIST EXPERTISE

The FFEW has long worked to connect the legal profession with appropriately experienced expert witnesses and specialist consultants.

Our Award Accolades section expands upon that objective.

It provides solicitors, barristers, insurers and other professional users with an additional resource through which they can discover experienced specialists, examine their backgrounds and learn more about the expertise available within the Federation.

An FFEW award does not replace the instructing solicitor’s own due diligence when selecting an expert for a particular matter. Every case is different and the suitability of an expert must always be considered in relation to the circumstances and requirements of the individual instruction.

However, our awards provide an important opportunity to highlight professionals whose experience, qualifications, specialist knowledge and contribution to expert witness practice deserve recognition.

FFEW DENTIST OF THE YEAR 2026–2027

Award for Excellence in Dental Expert & Professional Services

The Federation of Forensic & Expert Witnesses is proud to recognise Dr Khalid Master with its Dentist of the Year Award 2026–2027. This distinction reflects outstanding professional achievement, a sustained commitment to patient-centred care, and a career marked by continuous development, innovation and leadership within dentistry.

Following a detailed review of his professional background, FFEW believes Dr Master represents the high standard of excellence the Federation seeks to celebrate. His career combines advanced clinical knowledge, exceptional attention to detail, calm and gentle patient care, and a sustained commitment to education and mentoring.

Dr Master graduated from Liverpool University Dental School in July 2000 with distinction. He went on to spend almost a decade serving patients in Accrington, Lancashire, before becoming Co-Owner and Clinical Director of Bank View Smile Studios in 2010. His published profile records more than 50,000 patients treated across his career.

For FFEW, this award also recognises the power of professional reputation. Dr Master has built a profile that extends beyond routine clinical dentistry, earning recognition for the quality of his patient care, the breadth of his expertise and the continued development of Bank View Smile Studios under his leadership.

“A dentist whose clinical excellence, patient-centred ethos and professional influence have made him a standout figure in modern British dentistry.”

AT A GLANCE

  • Qualified with distinction – Liverpool University Dental School, 2000

WHY FFEW SELECTED DR KHALID MASTER

Recognising clinical excellence, calm and gentle care, and a career defined by continuous development.

The Federation of Forensic & Expert Witnesses is fortunate to work with some of the United Kingdom’s most respected dental and dento-legal experts. However, the FFEW Awards Programme deliberately looks beyond its existing membership in order to recognise excellence wherever it is found.

It was through this wider search that Dr Khalid Master came to our attention. His career reflects the exact blend of clinical quality, professional ambition and patient-centred care that the Federation seeks to celebrate.

Dr Master’s commitment to lifelong learning is particularly impressive. His practice profile records thousands of hours of postgraduate development, including more than 1,000 hours in the last five years alone. His training has covered areas including orthodontics, dental implants, gum disease, occlusion, smile enhancement, restorative dentistry and other advanced aspects of modern dental care.

He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Orthodontics, awarded with distinction. Published material describing his wider career records extensive development across orthodontics, implantology, periodontology, prosthodontics, endodontics and cosmetic dentistry.

For FFEW, this breadth matters. It demonstrates a dentist who has never stood still, but who has continually invested in his skills in order to provide patients with comprehensive, modern and ethically grounded care.

Just as importantly, Dr Master’s clinical identity has been built around reassuring anxious patients and delivering treatment in a calm and gentle environment. In a profession where fear and trust can have a major impact on whether patients seek treatment, that approach has become an important part of his professional reputation.

“For FFEW, excellence in dentistry is measured not only by technical skill, but by the ability to combine expertise, compassion and consistency over time.”

KEY REASONS FOR SELECTION

  • Clinical excellence and continuing professional development; broad advanced dental knowledge and postgraduate training.
  • A patient-first philosophy centred on calm, gentle and judgement-free care; sustained leadership and practice development.
  • Sustained leadership and practice development over more than a decade

LEADERSHIP, RECOGNITION & WIDER INFLUENCE

Why this multi-award-winning dentist stands out to the Federation.

The Federation was equally impressed by the scale of Dr Master’s wider contribution to dentistry. Since taking over Bank View Smile Studios as Co-Owner and Clinical Director in 2010, he has helped guide the practice to more than 30 dental, business and charity awards. His practice profile highlights major recognitions including Best Dental Practice UK and UK’s Best Dentist awards.

Bank View Smile Studios has also built a reputation for quality systems and patient trust. Published material highlights long-standing BDA Good Practice accreditation and the achievement of Investors in People Gold, distinctions that reinforce a culture of professionalism and continual improvement.

Beyond the clinic itself, Dr Master has established a wider public voice. Published profiles describe appearances and commentary across BBC Radio, Manchester Radio and Sky TV, alongside public education on oral hygiene and disease prevention.

The Federation was also struck by his commitment to mentoring the next generation. Published material credits him with helping and guiding more than 260 students, many from minority backgrounds, towards careers in dentistry, including work-shadowing opportunities and support with dental-school applications.

His wider community contribution is also significant. Dr Master serves as Chairman and Founding Trustee of the Abu Hanifah Foundation, an educational charity supporting programmes spanning education, youth development, sport and personal growth.

Professional recognition is strongest when it reflects more than clinical ability alone. In Dr Master’s case, the combination of dental excellence, leadership, mentoring, media engagement and community contribution presents a compelling picture of a professional whose influence extends far beyond the surgery.

That is why the Federation is proud to recognise Dr Khalid Master as its FFEW Dentist of the Year 2026–2027 – Award for Excellence in Dental Expert & Professional Services.

“Professional recognition is strongest when it reflects both outstanding patient care and a wider contribution to society.”
